THE NEW BASRA WATERFRONT

Basra, southern Iraq’s most important city, is opening up again after many years of war and recovery. To reflect this, Tamayouz Excellence Awards invites architects and designers to submit their ideas to transform the underused Dakeer Island into a vibrant recreational urban destination for locals and visitors.

REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR TERRORISM VICTIMS IN IRAQ
Results Announced
Participants were invited to submit their ideas for a Rehabilitation Centre for Terrorism Victims in Iraq. The rehabilitation Centre should offer a safe and comfortable space for the patients, supporting their health, psychological and physical needs.

A SANCTUARY FOR HOMELESS GIRLS IN IRAQ
Results Announced
Participants were invited to submit their ideas a sanctuary in Al-Madain for homeless and underage girls, tackling pressing societal issues faced in Iraq. While winning submissions will make a positive and massive impact on Iraq’s urgent humanitarian crisis, and provide a shelter for young girls, these designs also go to show how architecture and design is a powerful tool for change.

ALMEDINA YOUTH HOUSE AND PLAZA
Results Announced
Participants were asked to design a multi-activity youth complex and a public plaza in Almedina in Baghdad, creating a youthful cultural strip and a public platform that can host various cultural and social events. The Youth House, the plaza and their integration with each other and their surrounding context should inspire a transformation of the urban scene of Almedina.

AL-UMMA PARK IN BAGHDAD
Results Announced
Participants were asked to redesign Al Umma Park as a green lung in the capital’s dense urban fabric, creating an optimistic vision for the future and a safe space for public gatherings and socialising. Proposals should reflect the legacy of the park and integrate the existing artwork within its redesign.
2018
SCHOOL IN THE IRAQI MARSHES
Results Announced
Participants were asked to design a primary school in the long-forgotten area of the Iraqi marshes, taking into account the limitations of the area and the ecological impact of construction on nature and the fauna of the marshes. The design is for a 6-class primary school serving the nearby villages with all the amenities of a modern school.
